Upgrading to DVD writer?

C

Colin

I'm wondering what I need to do to upgrade to a DVD writer, I'm thinking of
getting an OEM Sony + / - drive. Presently all my eidi ports are used, I
have a Plextor cd burner and a dvd rom drive as well as 2 hard drives.

Should I get rid of the Plextor burner or the dvd rom?

Do I have to uninstall the drive I get rid of, or will XP handle that by
itself?

The Sony drive comes with no software, what will I need to burn backups or
other dvd's to dvdr's?

Any help appreciated
Colin

When I got mine I kept the CDR/RW and removed the DVD ROM drive. Installed
the DVD+R/RW and was good to go. Just unplugged the DVD ROM and plugged in
the writer, XP handled the rest.

So what's the way to go: plus or minus? It seems like minus?
Drives that do both +RW and -RW cost almost twice as -RW...

Time to do some research. I would think +.

I would replace the burner: the DVD will burn CDs as well, and this
would give you both devices at DVD level.

I would uninstall the drive first - just as a matter of tidyness. In
Device manager; highlight it and Action - Uninstall.

You should not need any specific drivers - just plug the device in as
replacement, boot up, and PnP should find it and have it working. The
software you had should work - you may need something fresh for full
advantage of DVD. Nero will burn DVD in most formats, and there is a
new version 6 just out. Or Easy CD version 6 includes specific DVD
movie making software

I would drop the DVD-ROM because the Sony RW will play DVDs
and the CD-RW is probably a faster CD burner than the DVD
burner burns CDs.

Check your specs. If I am doing a disk copy I would image
the disk whether CD or DVD to the hard drive rather than
going disk to disk.

8x4x32x is slow, the DVD-RW will beat that, run both DVD-ROM
and DVD -RW.

| Thank you, that is good advice as my cd burner is only
8x4x32. I'm using
| Easy CD creator 5 now. Do you know if I can use Nero and
Easy CD creator
| together or do I have to opt for one or the other.
|
| Thanks again
