Upgrading from XP SP2 to x64

I have just purchased a 64 bit processor and been running XP for a month.
It's great and all but I want to see how fast it will be with x64. This
raises a few problems. I don't want to format my hard drive I want to just
pop in the x64 cd and have it install over XP. Is this possible? Also all
this talk of 64bit drivers has me more than a little worried. Will 32bit
drivers work in x64? As far as I know the only hardware I have with 64bit
drivers would be my ATI video card.

Hi

Before you install x64 go to the manufacturer's web site for all your
hardware and see if they have 64-bit drivers available. Then 'clean'
install x64 onto a separate partition, not over the top of XP.

The 64-bit version of Windows XP must be installed "clean"
on a reformatted drive or partition. It cannot upgrade over
the conventional 32-bit version of Windows XP.

No. There is no upgrade path. If you want to use WinXPx64, you'll
either need to format the hard drive and perform a clean installation,
or create a dual-boot configuration, assuming you've a free partition
onto which to install WinXPx64.

No. So check on the availability of 64-bit drivers with the
manufacturers of your sound card, modem, NIC, printer, scanner, etc.,
before proceeding.
