Upgraded from Win98 to WinXP - Fans Shut Off

K

Just upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP Professional SP2. Just
before Windows XP completes loading, it shuts off the cooling fan on my
motherboard. This never happened on Windows 98. I have ruled out faulty
hardware: I dual boot Windows and Linux - when running Linux, the fan
operates normally.

My systems hardware is admittedly old, but I updated the BIOS a couple
of months back to a version current as of 2003, which worked fine
running Windows 98. Any comments or ideas as to how to get fan running
properly under XP appreciated!

Have you checked your motherboard's documentation to determine whether
or not the fan is supposed to be operating continuously? It may well
be that, as with many motherboards, the fan is supposed to spin only
when the temperature reaches a certain level. This may be the first
time you've seen it operated as designed.

Thanks for the response. I did look through my motherboard's
documentation, but I found nothing to indicate that the fan only spins
when the temperature reaches a certain level. I'll check the
documentation more carefully tonight to see if I missed anything.

Meanwhile, my research today indicates that another issue I posted
about separately, shortly before I posted my original post hin this
thread, may be related. I also experience a problem where WinXP keeps
reassigning the resources for my modem so that there is a conflict and
it doesn't function. I have found a temporary workaround, but I suspect
that the root cause might be that WinXP's APCI driver doesn't interact
properly with my BIOS APCI. I found a thread which may indicate a way
to deactivate WinXP's APCI. I am going to try that and see if that
fixes both issues.

That's a strong possibility. Many early attempts at APCI were less
than fully successful.

Disabling Windows XP's ACPI driver corrected both issues.
