Upgrade problem Win98 to XP

Ernest Moshurchak

Attempted to upgrade a Compaq DeskPro EX Win 98 to XP Home. PC has
Intel 667Mhz,191Mb RAM, and 35Gb available disk space. Installation
appeared to complete normally and activated successfully. On restart,
get an XP loading screen, then a screen with the world "welcome" and
then a large Win98 emblem and computer is unresponsive except for Task
Manager which shows running processes and CPU activity but no
applications. When shut off computer, get a Windows standing by prompt
before computer shuts down. Tried to repair installation to no avail.

Upgrade report:
Hardware incompatibilty - HP PCS 900 series printer
Software incompatibiltiy - Windows 98 (current screen saver)
Norton Antivirus LiveUpdate

I should have uninstalled AV first. Tomorrow will tryto get into safe
mode. If that fails, the only thing I can think of is to re-install
the original OS. Has anyone seen this during an upgrade?

Do yourself a favour and do a clean installation of WinXP.
You will end up with a far more stable and robust OS.
The two OSs are radically different, and an upgrade from
one to the other involves numerous compromises, depending
on what software and drivers you have installed, especially
third-party stuff over which MS has no control.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
