upgrade to xp

Bill

I installed a new hard drive on a Compaq machine, bought
upgrade version of windows xp. set up program does not
recognize Compaq CD. I have a licensed version of windows
98 but can not make the computer read the CD I have. Also,
the Compaq CD will not install windows 98 to the new
drive. I called compaq, they say "not our problem"

Do I have to buy the full blown version?

A computer manufacturer's "restore CD" is not regarded as an eligible
media when performing a "clean install" of Windows XP. You must
have either a "Microsoft" Windows 98/ME/2000 CD. In your case,
you'll need the "full version" of Windows XP.

P.S. Most "Restore CDs" will only work when a computer has the
original hardware installed. Hardware replacements should be of the same
make and model as the original hardware if you expect the "Restore CD"
to work.
