Upgrade to XP Pro from XP Home SP1

I just purchased 2 new computers for the office. I purchased them with XP
Home, not knowing that you could not join domains in XP Home. I have two
retail versions of XP Pro, however, they are a couple of years old. Can I
upgrade XP Home SP 1 to XP Pro without Service Pack 1? It seems to me this
could cause some problems. I guess, alternatively, I could do a clean
install of XP Pro then download all the updates. Since the computers are
brand new, I have not installed any software on them. So I wouldn't have to
reinstall much, if anything.

I know I can access the files on the network with XP Home. However,
accessing the network directories seems slower to me compared to when you
are logged on to the domain from the start.

Any suggestions?

One cannot upgrade XP Home w/SP1 installed to XP Pro
w/o SP1. What I would suggest you do is create a SP2
"slipstreamed" version of Windows XP. Then you can
easily upgrade over XP Home w/SP1 easily and have the
latest Service Pack installed at the same time.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:
