Upgrade to XP//Display Problem-HELP

I loaded my windows xp onto my old home computer-an old
aptiva from 4 years ago-according to parameters it should
be compatible but as soon as windows xp starts to load up
the display goes black-it continues to load and the
startup music plays but i can't see anything-in safe mode
i can see administrator/owner choices when not in safe
mode same thing every time-black screen 3-5 seconds after
windows xp startup logo screen comes up-any ideas
