Upgrade Office 00 to Office 07, cannot start Outlook

On Exchange 2007, upgraded Office 00 to Office 07 (test client, XP sp2).
Outlook startup errors with:
Cannot start Outlook, MAPI32 is corrupt or the wrong version. I restarted.
Renamed MAPI32.DLL MAPI32.BAD, ran Repair on Outlook 2007 in Add/Remove
Programs. Still cannot start Outlook. What's the advice:
1. Is there a fix to try?
2. Uninstall, reinstall?
3. Format C: and start over, the gulf is too wide?

did you make a new profile? did you uninstall office 2000 before upgrading?

No. No. I tried this first test with the simplest route - put in the CD,
let setup autostart, select Upgrade, let it run. I've un into this Outlook
problem. We're preparing to upgrade all our company PC's - standard is XP
sp2, Office 2000 including Outlook 2000 as client on our new Exchange Server
2007, a few business applications - to Office 2007. I'm looking for the best
way to do that. Thanks.

At the same test machine in Add/Remove Programs I did an Office 2007 Change,
and removed Outlook. I restarted, did another Add/remove, Change, added
Outlook back in; and restarted. This time it's working so far. Maybe I
could have removed Outlook from Office 2000 before I did the initial upgrade,
and it would have worked?

Yes, removing outlook 2000 first seems to work much better. Even if the 2007
setup says it will remove the old office version, it doesn't seem to remove
outlook correctly.
