I attempted to upgrade Win 98 to XP and the upgrade report
indicated "You cannoit upgrade this Windows installation
to Windows XP, because you have more than one operating
system installed on you compiuter. ..." After attempting
an install of Win 2000 professional several months ago
however, I decided against doing so and completely
formatted my hard drive and started out with a clean drive.
I reinstalled Win 98. Did pieces of 2000 remain on my
drive somehow?

How do I get rid of the second OS?

When u put the new OS CD to install, reboot and press F1, it will ask prompt
you to delete the existing partition or create new one.
i ran into the same kind of problem and I think I deleted the existing
partition and then reinstalled the OS.
Any way watch your step , ask every one else , and take your own decision.
