Upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro results in freeze at "Please Wait..." after completed installation

Hi all!

I have a brand new (got it last weekend) HP Pavilion desktop (a824n) that
came with OEM XP Home Edition installed. I am trying to upgrade to XP PRO,
but every time I do the install/upgrade, it goes through the whole process
and then "locks up" after the reboot at the end of the upgrade. As it comes
on, it shows the boot screen, then eventually comes to rest on the "Please
Wait..." screen.

It gets to a point where the hard drive access light (LED) no longer blinks
to show activity, and even if I wait an hour or so, it does not complete the
installation.

I assume it is a hardware problem (or component issue), 'cause if I
shut-er-down and restart, it goes to the desktop as expected, but then I get
application errors such as the network wizard failing, etc.

I have 1Gig of memory, 3.0 Ghz of speed, and 200Gb of disk space, so I don't
think it's a constriction of resources. Prolly more of a conflict or
something.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

Uninstall your antivirus program and disconnect any peripheral
hardware devices, except for your mouse, keyboard and monitor.

I'll give 'er a try, but actually the only part I will need to do is the
antivirus, as I have not hooked anything else up but the keyboard, mouse,
and monitor. It came OEM with Norton Antivirus trial, but I will be
updating that to a full version I already have after I get XP Pro up and
running, so I'll uninstall it and try it again from there.

Any other suggestions, folks? I can't imagine I am the only HP user that
has immediately upgraded from XP Home to Pro. I really haven't done
anything else, as this is the first thing I decided to do after unpacking
the 'puter and installing all the win/hp updates.

Am curious why you're upgrading from Home to PRO.

It sounds to me like something in Windows has become
corrupt, for whatever reason. I would be tempted to re-
load XP Home from the Restore Disc, then try the upgrade
again. The network wizard is failing for a reason and I
doubt the reason is hardware. Even if there is a
legitimate hardware problem, the wizard should still run.

Good Luck !
