Upgrade from Home to Professional

V

Vic Russell

Hi,

I need to upgrade an XP Home machine to XP Professional without losing all
the settings, installations etc. Is this possible with "Microsoft Windows
XP Professional Upgrade" or is there another way?

Regards,

Vic

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program and then defrag your hard drive.

Yes, an upgrade is just that. Be sure you buy a recent
version with SP2, some stores might have old stock on the
shelf.

All settings should remain intact, accounts, passwords and
data. Backing up and writing down those details is still a
good idea because things can go wrong sometimes. You will
find that the process goes much better if you do several
maintenance steps before any such upgrade or installation.
Run full system virus scans, run full system spyware scan,
run chkdsk and defrag. Remove (uninstall) printers and
scanners and other peripheral devices and reinstall them
after the upgrade.

In particular, boot up into Home then insert the XP Pro cd. When the
splashscreen appears, select Perform Other Tasks and then Transfer Files and
Settings. This will start the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard which will
allow you to save your data and settings against possible problems during
the upgrade (unlikely but still a recommended procedure). Even though it is
the same machine, the references are to "your old computer" and "your new
computer", meaning in your case before and after the upgrade.

Hi Vic,

You can directly upgrade from WIndows XP Home edition to Windows XP Pro
with the data intact as other has suggested.

One point is Microsoft does not support upgrading Windows XP Home Edition
with Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Windows XP Professional without SP1. Please
purchase the installation disk with SP1 or above slipstreamed.

This is address from the following link:

Windows XP supported upgrade paths

In addition, backup the data before you take any action is always the best
idea. :)

Any update, let us get in touch!
