Can I upgrade Windows XP Professional to Windows XP Professional?

Hi, I wanted to buy a Windows XP Upgrade Professional to upgrade a Windows XP
Professional machine. Can I do that, or do I have to buy a full retail
version?

to upgrade a "Windows XP Professional machine" to ... Windows XP
Professional?

Yes, I did... The post is correct. The machine in question does not have a
licensed version of XP on it, and I want to give one to the person in
question.

And you didn't think that information to be relevant enough to be
included in your original post? Your post was not correct, the correct
question would be something like "How can I replace a pirated Windows XP
product key with a valid one? Or, "How can I upgrade a pirated Windows
XP Pro installation with a legitimate copy, can I simply do an in-place
upgrade to register a legitimate product key?"

Thanks that information is useful. The last part of the question though did
not get anwsered. Should I buy the upgrade eddition of Windows XP or the new
XP version?

I'm not 100% sure about that. The guys here
http://www.pchell.com/support/windowsgenuineadvantage.shtml say that it
can be done but you might want to ask the folk in the Genuine forum:
