Upgrade Compaq 0664h Motherboard

R

Roman

Hello Everyone!

I want to upgrade my daughter's PC with a more powerful processor.
At the moment we have a PIII 600MHz Coppermine on a Compaq 0664h
motherboard.

I tried to find info in the web but I failed.

It would be great to get some hints where to find informatino or which
processor could fit.

Thanks in advance and
Best regards

Hi Roman, only found one reference to a 0664h here
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/archive/index.php/t-63953.html

It`s hfmollers item (halfway down).

Some info, but I don`t think I`d waste money on it.

Here is one link that suggests that it could take up to a 933mhz cpu

http://www.trademe.com.au/nz/auction-9411996.htm

probably not really worth doing.

How much RAM does the machine have and what OS?

You may have better luck with just increasing the RAM

I dunno if it's worth to spend any more money to patch the older
technology (or slow system) or not. And since just about everything relates
to computer is so cheap these days, so I would REPLACE instead of upgrade to
old system

If you want to build your own then you can check with sites like
www.pricewatch.com , www.nextag.com , www.newegg.com or just www.google.com
around for a reasonable price of Momboard and CPU, and may be some memory.
Case you may just get from local store cuz the shipping cost may not save
you any money, and hard drive sometime can be cheaper at local than online
etc..

Or if you don't want to build then I would pick one complete system for
around $400-500 and it would be 3-4 times faster than your 600Mhz system.

It'll likely run any Coppermine P3 or Celeron, though it may
not be so much of a performance increase relative to
replacing whole system. Might be reasonable if you can get
the CPU practically free.

It seems that is an i810e chipset based board, which often
means integrated video. That is another weak spot on this
system if present, usurps a significant portion of the
memory bandwidth from PC133 memory.

The other issue here is that if your present memory is only
PC100, using a P3-933 with it's 133MHz FSB would mean
asynchronous memory bus speed which is only a slight
performance penalty, but that much the worse when using
integrated video.

If that system uses a passive heatsink, you may also find it
harder to keep a significantly faster (per the era of
course) and correspondingly hotter CPU, cool enough.

If the hard drive is as old as the rest, it too will be a
bottleneck to typical PC uses, and at this age is also a
potential (more likely) failure point and could be due for
replacement for both the data retention and performance
factors.

I don't know what the intended uses are (beyond what was
mentioned - WinXP), but it could be more cost and time
effective to look at replacing the whole system. As it sits
now, if it has a reasonable PSU I'm thinking it might make a
reasonable fileserver/backup/NAS system... even better with
a Gigabit NIC in it.

We have 512MBRAM and the OS is XPP ...

I 'll try to get a used 933Mhz CPU
Thanks to all of you ...
Roman

Well 512 megs is OK for XP
so if you could find a CPU at a very low price it may be worth it then

good luck to you on your project

Thanks for your help!

It's not just about the cost.
It's also fun just to do it ...
