Upgading To XP-Home

I cannot figure out how to upgrade from Windows 98SE to
Windows XP Home Edition without having to run both O.S's on
two hard-discs. When I tried to upgrade, a message said
that I cannot go from 98 to XP. But if I format my
hard-disc like microsoft told me and insert the XP cd I
cannot install. I had to redo 98 and run XP on the
secondary. Can someone please help me?

Apparently, you acquired an "OEM Version" of Windows XP.
OEM versions cannot upgrade an existing Windows installation. Only
"Retail Versions" can upgrade. Either purchase a "Retail Version" of Windows XP
or reformat your drive to install the OEM version "clean".

OEM versions of Windows XP:

-- cannot upgrade over an existing Windows installation.
-- must be installed "clean" on a freshly reformatted drive or partition.
-- cannot be transferred to a different computer in the future.
-- the license cannot be sold or transferred to another user.
-- are not eligible for free Microsoft technical support.
-- must be purchased with some type of computer hardware.
-- any problems whatsoever with the installation CD or Product Key.
is not eligible for Microsoft support....you have to deal with the "seller".
-- cost less than "retail versions" due to the above limitations/risks.

I purchased the version from the store and yet I cannot
upgrade. If I format and install from DOS I cannot get my
computer to recognize the cd in my drive. It says that it
is an invalid cd.
Microsoft told me to do a "clean install" and yet I had to
reinstall 98SE and run that to install XP as a secondary
operating system.

Some retail versions are OEM versions.

Formatting and installing from DOS is not the method to install XP. You
need to boot from the CD. Try the following procedure to do a clean
install:
Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive, boot with the XP
CD in the drive. If it isn't or you are not sure, you need to enter the
system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter setup press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

A few screens into the boot process, if you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.
