Updating Non-Genuine with Retail winXP Pro

I have a computer with the XP Pro Volume Licensing. A while ago
Microsft told me to purchase a copy of the Full retail XP Pro SP2 and
It would make it a legit copy. I have been hesitate to install it, but
I guess its time. When I put the retail disk in Windows it can be
"upgraded". When I started from the booting from a cd rom it can be
"repaired". Is either way ok? I would still like a safer method.
Does Microsoft have a tool that could be used to enter the new key and
change it to the retail pro version without basically reinstalling,
repairing or upgrading. Just afraid to lose data. If anyone can help
I would appreciate it. Just curious, are their any other versions of
XP Pro that can do this sort of legal update? Can earler versions of
retail XP Pro (such as SP-1 or 1a) be used? Can Retail Upgrade XP Pro
do the same thing, etc.?
Thanks again.

I'm sorry but is this the wrong place to post a question like this? I
figured it was a support type issue. I thank you for the first two
links but they again gave me a feeling something could go wrong.
Pehaps from your last link you missunderstood me. I am not looking for
any hack. I am looking to take a purchased legitimate copy of Retail
Windows XP Pro to upgrade a non-genuine Volume License as advided by
Microsoft. When I last went to the update page one of the options was
to purchase a valid key from Microsoft and it could be installed with
some type of tool provided by microsoft. This seemed far less
intrusive then an upgrade or repair. Can I obtain this tool to install
my legal valid copy of Retail Windows XP Pro? Thanks

No - right place.

And the links (I sent two - the last one you may be referring to (Asking
questions the "smart" way) is part of my signature - has nothing to do with
your issue) I sent to you are how to perform a repair install..

And yes - things can go wrong - but they could go wrong when you download
and install Firefox as well.

This is a bit chancier because you are changing your illegitimate license
with a legitimate one and you more than likely have a "volume license" now -
meaning the only way to put a legitimate on there is to perform the repair
install (the two links are the same instructions - one or the other may be
more understandable by you - thus I sent two to give you a backup in case
one was harder to follow than the other for you.)

Now - Microsoft does have a key-changer utility - that is a very new
addition..

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key
to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!

I have not tried it - but feel free to give it a shot!
