Updating Defender & Unable to remove . . .

Hi -- new to the discussion group, and hoping you have the answers to my
questions.
1. Real Time runs every morning at 4:00am, and Defender updated constantly.
But, every day I am told that I need to update as (Windows Defender hasn't
been updated in 42 (or more) days.) Why will it not correct itself -- or what
do I do to correct the problem.

2. My History shows 2 itmes (NewDotNet & WebHancer) as HIGH, Removed -- but
never quarantines them. I have tried to remove them but Defender says the
action Failed, 0x804005. Now what? And why haven't they been permanently
removed if the settings are set too?
Thanx -- hope this isn't too much.

I can't answer question 2 but the answer to question 1 is to follow this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

I had the same problem and tried loading the update(s) both from the
application and also from the Microsoft update website without success. And
then I read Bill Sandersons reply to a similar question and found worked
completely.

I am, at the moment anyhow, completely up to date!!

Hope it works for you,

HOORAY!!! Thank you, cws -- I did exactly as you suggested and am now free of
the Defender exclamation point on my taskbar, and am now "up to date!"
Your instructions were perfect, as was your venacular for a "wanna'be!"
Thanx again,
Linda

I see cw5666 has taken care of one of your questions, so I'll try to take on
the second one.

I believe this failure to clean relates to the file detected being contained
in an archive file--zip, arj, cab, whatever. Microsoft won't just delete
such a file, since it might contain valuable userdata in addition to the
"bad" item.

The key to taking care of this is to go back to the System event log at the
time of the scan that found these items. There will be yellow-triangle
warning messages with source windefend that, in the details, will give the
complete path and filenames involved. There's also a handy copy to
clipboard button to post those details back to this board for more help
here.

Bill, I can't thank you enough for responding so quickly. Again, Microsoft
has created another fine "tool" with the WD discussion group!

I can't find the System Event Log in WD; hence, no yellow triangle, nor clip
board button. The Trojan info I received came from WD History. I followed
the source info, and deleted the files and also, instantly emptied the trash.
I believe the files were exe fles (Screensaver) -- but, I also think they
may have been a zip, as well. Although I also deleted 2 other files, and
they may have been the zip files. (Sorry, I truly can't remember, and don't
think an exe file can be a zip -- right?)

As I deleted them, why are they still coming up in the daily scan? If the
"action" tab lists them as "remove" -- doesn't that mean they were removed?
Or, must I do so manually by going into the registry? (Which will scare me to
death, as you by now must see that I'm not kidding about only being a
"wannabe'" and only marginally adept...

But, I do follow instructions well, so if you can respond in elementary
computerize, I will do what ever you suggest. :)

Thanx again -- I'll wait to hear from you.

Thanks from me as well! This has been bothering me for days and I kept
uninstalling and reinstalling Defender - now I see that this was exactly the
wrong thing to do! Great instructions.

Hi all, I really have had this problem of activating the updates since 63
days, each time I start my computer I got the same message saying that
windows difender hasn´t been updated since 63 days despite the fact that i
RUN THE UPDATE and it finnish with windows defender is up to date with
definitions and engine upgrades, but still the same message of inactive
update appear.
so the solution is this, very simple, very effective.

many thanks to you :)
