Have a friend who had to format and reinstall XP. Since he has very slow
dialup service, he asked it I could download the updates and copy to disc
for him. I gave him SP1 and a cumulative patch of all updates available up
to October (downloaded for the MSFT site). Anyway, his wife tried to
install the updates but received an error msg saying "the server name and
address could not be resolved". She was installing while offline. Should
she have connected to the internet and tried to install, or is there some
other reason for this error msg. TIA

After installing SP1, sixteen critical/security updates are offered for
download. During the installation phase, two need further, additional
download, i.e.instances of direct embedding to WinXP, skipping the download
phase. These two updates are 826939 and 824105.

Thanks, Bee, but my question was "do you have to be connected to the
internet in order to install updates from a CD?" Is there a need for the
updates to communicate with Microsoft during the installation?

process?

No. We use cds quite a lot. No need to be connected to the internet.

826939 has two versions: express-installation (2.7MB) and standard (8.96MB)
The former is available only from the Windows Update website, and that is
the version I have -- picked and saved from the Temporary Internet File
following download-and-install of the update. The standard version is
available from the Windows Update Catalog (also from MS Download Center and
via Software Update Services).

My suspicion was initially raised on noticing the small size of the
cumulative patch. In the installation phase, it was closely watched with
the ZoneAlarm traffic meter. Shortly after installation had begun, ZA
popped up asking for permission to connect to MS Windows Update, and
thereafter hectic inbound traffic was observed. This was repeated with
824105. I have not tried installing these patches off-line.

Apology for not making this crystal clear.
