3 1/2 inch disc became unformatted after installing Windows update

My husband was working off his 3 1/2 inch floppy disc on Word when he received a Microsoft pop-up asking him to install new updates. He installed the new updates, and now that particular disc can not be read. A message pops up adsing to format the disc, but that would cause deletion of all info currently on the disc. Can anyone help?

This is MS explanation of the problem:

basically seems you would need access to another PC running windows 98 to
check the disk. Don't format the disk or as you say you would delete all the
files. It may be readable in another system so you can recover the files,
you should really work off the hard drive and use the floppy as a back-up or
when transferring data.
