Updates XP Pro Problems

I aquired a PC through some horse trading with XP Pro
installed and the PC runs fine with no problems. I have
had the PC for 6 months & decided I should get the
updates. When I try to update the program, the upgrades
download, but will not install. In looking at the System
Properties I find that the PC is registered to "Valued
Customer". I did get a Windows XP Pro CD with the
computer, but I am now wondering if it is a legal program.

Is there a way to determine if the XP Pro is legal or not?

My laptop is running XP Home & I can get the updates &
install them with no problems.

Any help would be appreciated.
