unable to update virus, spyware or any program that needs to connect to their
server (ei lavasoft ad-aware, pc-cillin internet security etc), my antivirus
definition is getting very old, I can get to internet explorer accessing the
web without any problems but everytime I try to download updates for the
programs installed my pc just cannot connect to the server. I have windows XP
home ed. PLease can someone be kind enough to suggest anything at all
thank you

Well it depends on how you connect to the Internet. Like dialup, ADSL,
cable, satellite, etc. As they require different answers. Also does
anything work, like email programs (Outlook Express, Netscape, Endora,
etc.), instant messengers, etc. Also are you connected to a network?
Like through a router?

Usually one of the first things to check is if you have more than one
firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware, running at the same time. This can
usually stop Internet communications. And the most common thing is the
Windows built in firewall being kicked in by accident when you are
already running another one like ZoneAlarm or something.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
