Updated: Windows Defender to Version 1.1.1593.0

and normally when there is an upgrade to a program, you should be able to
put it over the old one, not have to uninstall it, loose all your settings
which a royal pain in the pants to redo and now it has to remember all over
again everything it learned before- this is a major BUMMER! and should not
happen.

Question: did it preserve your settings?

I'm not sure if I understand your question. This is not an engine or
signature update, and I'm not sure if Windows update will offer an update to
the program itself, as I've never seen anything on WU but signature/engine
updates. Anyway, i guess you could wait and see. I un-installed version
1.1.1592.0 and installed this version without a problem, all in about 10
minutes, based on "We encourage you to upgrade to this version", plus the
fact that they took pains to tell you how to uninstall 1.1.1592.0. Even if
it should ever be offered on Windows Update, it would be like downloading
Internet Explorer 7 or .NET Framework 3.0: getting the program from Windows
Download Center now isn't less legitimate than getting it from Windows Update
later. As to why this version is an improvement, who knows (no new release
notes, as of yet).

Hi Pat,

No, it did not . I noticed that the uninstall of the previous version,
using Add/Remove programs as per directions, that the entire
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Defender folder was deleted (it had not been entirely deleted in previous
upgrades, as I recall). This actually was fine by me, because, frankly, it
had become huge, and I don't think all the files were very relevant anymore
(old engine versions, big logs, scan histories, etc.). I pretty much have
my settings down to a science, so it really didn't take that long to redo
them for the latest Defender.

Thanks for the reply, Dean! I will wait for update-Tuesday to see if
Automatic Updates will bring it in. Otherwise I will have to write down
my current settings.

Strange that the update from beta to full release did not require an
uninstall...? (I know for some users it did).

and it did not preserve my settings either
