Trying to update windows XP Home for the first time on my fathers PC.
When reaching the windows update site and trying to scan for updates I
get the following message:

Windows Update Error
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
requested page.
Select from any of the following pages for information about Windows
Update services, or send us your feedback.

Support Information

You can also get online support if you are having problems with
Windows Update.

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0005)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support
incident; you may or may not receive a response.

The windows update.log shows this:

Hi,

Close Internet Explorer. Start/run "regsvr32 softpub.dll"

Repeat for the following files (regsvr32 xxx.dll):

Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Dssenh.dll
Rsaenh.dll
Gpkcsp.dll
Sccbase.dll
Slbcsp.dll
Cryptdlg.dll

See if this helps.

Thanks.

After posting my question I came across another newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsupdate.
There are a lot of postings regarding the "0X800C0005" problem.
Your solution is only a part of them (thanks anyway). Mostly likely
the problem is caused by not being able to connect to secure sites
(https). This is why the error in the update.log file shows when
connecting to https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp .
According to "Lucy" this is the solution:

0x800c0005 means that IE can not "see" Windows Update:

Clear Internet Cache:
1. Click Tools > Internet Options
2. In the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click "Delete Cookies"
3. Click "Delete Files" click "Delete all offline content" click OK
4. In the "History" section, click "Clear History".
5. Click "OK".

Add the following Trusted Sites:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Security."
4. Click the Trusted Sites icon.
5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all
sites in
this zone."
7. Add the following sites.
http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com
