Update & Rollback Failed

So after several failed attempts at updating XP MCE to Vista Ultimate, I
figured I'd give it one last shot before doing a clean install. Bad idea -
this time not only did it fail (with an error about not being able to locate
the entry point to a function....), but the rollback to XP failed also!

I figured, Ok, I'll just install it to a 2nd partition. Nope! It's an
upgrade version, have to start the install from within windows! So now I'm
left with an unusable computer. It seems like I have to:
1) Install XP to 2nd partition
2) Copy data from partition 1 to partition 2
3) Install XP to 1st partition (unless I can swap the drives; it's usually
preferable to have your primary OS installed on the first part of the disk,
no?)
4) Upgrade to Vista

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to bypass steps 1-3 above? Any way
to either get that upgrade to complete or at least get the rollback to
complete?

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you need more info from the log files, please also include instructions
on how to get it! When the rollback part starts now, it just boots up a
command prompt (doesn't even try to rollback) and only the x: (which i think
is the temp partition setup creates) seems to be accessable, and I can't find
any useful log files).

One thing I find helpful is to run the disk defragmenter before updating or
installing any major programs.

I did that before this last attempt actually.. if anything, it caused more
problems =/

It sounds like whatever happens, you're going to do a somewhat clean
install.
Do you still need to backup your files that are still on the both
partitions?
