VISTA ULTIMATE - UPGRADE FAILED

The Upgrade Advisor passed and I was able to begin installing Vista Ultimate.
In the middle of the installation, I got the "Upgrade could not be
completed". The system rebooted and began to recover my XP installation. In
the middle of that process, it went to a "black screen" and stayed there.
Now, whenever i try to reboot with the Vista Ultimate disk, I get the options
to Rollback to previous version, boot directly to XP or boot to Vista. NONE
OF THEM WORK. I reinstalled XP on another partition, and can see the
directory structure of my previous XP installation. However, all my files,
photos, etc... are no longer in those subdirectories. I've looked in the
directories that Vista created (My Music, Pictures & Videos) but they're not
there either.

In a directory named $WINDOWS.~Q, my entire MY DOCUMENTS directory tree is
there, but there are no files in the sub-directories. Is there anything that
can be done so I can recover my family photos?

if they are there in vista they would be under
Users/"username"/Documents
and then the documents, pictures , etc... folders.
