Update problem

I'm in the U.K., running XP Home Edition and trying to use the MS Security
Update CD-ROM.
Windows Update is offering me several Critical Updates. My pdating history
says that I installed them all successfully more than a month ago.
Would SKS please tell me how I can establish whether I've got 'em or not?

TIA.

There are two solutions to this problem. The first is to delete the update,
download and reinstall it. I suggest you only do one or two at a time. It
appears your install history is corrupt.
The other is to correct a corrupt 'catroot2' file. Search for the file and
rename it such as catrootold. Reboot and download and install the updates. A
new catroot2 file will be generated.

Many thanks. However, it apears that catroot2 is a folder and not a file. Do
I rename the folder? And will an update via the Security Update CD recreate
the folder together with its subfolders and files?

TIA

Sorry, it is a folder. Just rename it. When you click on 'Windows Update' a
new folder will be created. (Going to MS update site). I cannot speak for the
Security Update CD as I have never used it. My guess is that it would if it is
the CD obtained from MS.

Thanks again. I now have a new catroot2 folder, and Windows Update is now
telling me that I don't need any crritical updates. So I hope the problem is
now sorted.

Installation History still shows that most of the updates were intalled in
February and again yesterday, but I don't suppose it matters much (?)

The MS Security Update CD seemed to work just fine BTW.

Many thanks for your advice.

Neddie.
