Update KB823980 failed on W2K

I have a problem installing windows updates or even Service Pack 4 for
Windows 2000. Even if I manually download and try to update fixs they all
fail saying that they failed to check the integrity of update.inf and
suggesting I ensure the cryptographic service is enable.
The log from my latest attempt KB823980 is included at the bottom of this
email. It states that the update cannot verify the size of the following:
c:\winnt\_000017_.cat
c:\winnt\oem25.cat
Neither of the two files is present in c:\winnt. Where can I obain these
files? Can I copy them from the Windows 2000 CD?
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Neil,

Try the following:

1. Close all open programs, including McAfee or other Anti-virus program.

2. Rename the C:\%Windir%\System32\CATROOT2 folder to CATROOT3.

3. Repeat the attempt to install the update.


Any change? If not please post the Windows Update.log file from the Windows
or Winnt directory.

Interesting suggestion - except for the fact that I do not have a
CATROOT2 folder. Should I have one? What would have installed this
directory?

Neil,

Try the following:

1. Close all open programs, including McAfee or other Anti-virus
