Update does not work

Didn't have any problem with original issue but the newer version does not
update. It says it doesn't need update but version is back in July, this is
only when behind the firewall. Firewall logs do not show any problems. I
downloaded new version from web last week and it didn't work. I have same on
laptop and it updates manually but not automatically when not on network. I
have uninstalled from desktops. Will the new one resolve this issue?

Thanks, Cindy

The version I got from MS directly updated to .701 correctly after a manual
download on 11/25.
The digital signature timestamp from Microsoft is Tuesday, November 15, 2005
Suggest you go ahead and manually download it first then install, if the
timestamp matches, since .615 will expire on 12/31.
The alternative is to get it from Majorgeeks, but I can't imagine that all Ms
sites are not current as of this date.

I'm confused. You mention downloading a new version last week, and say it
didn't work. Then you ask if "the new one" will resolve an issue with
updating.

I'm lost about which versions are having what problems, in what settings!

Here's what should be true. To tell what version of the program you are
running, go to Help, about, and look for the program version--should be
numbers like 1.0.615 or 1.0.701. Those are (one of) the old versions, and
the newer version available since about 11/22/2005.

If you are seeing version numbers other than those, you either have a
completely outdated version (.5xx) or some short-lived .6xx builds (613,
614) which did have definition update problems.

..701 changes the expiration date from 12/31/2005 to 7/30/2006. I know of no
other changes in it. So, as far as updating or not updating, it should not
be different from .615.

So we should try to solve your updating problems as they are--put in the new
build and lets start from there.

When you say that it fails to update, I assume you are talking about the
definitions? These have numbers like 5781, for example, and are also
visible at Help, about.

I put this on some desktops and laptops at work. Used the one I downloaded
for the laptop I am on. It is version .615 and works when not at work. Last
week I went to MS site and downloaded from there. Whatever version was in
the downloads section is the one I loaded and it did not update on my desktop
at work. It pretends it checks for updates and says it is current but it is
not. I the download site still has other beta versions I guess I could have
downloaded an old one, it is already uninstalled.

I will try to install version .701 at work and see what happens.

The other issue
1. Version 6.15
2. XP Pro SP2 OS
3. Normally signed on as "user" NO Admin privileges(MS Best Practice)
4. Indicates it was updating signature but when I checked today it had not
updated since November 15, 2005
5. Manually ran update from GUI with "user" privileges and it updated
properly.

I am hoping MS is going to come up with Enterprise Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware
next year. I work for a non-profit with limited budget, I have been trying
to use the MS system on laptops and a few desktops. So the issue of the
software not updating was on a number of different machines all installed
using the exe for .615

Do I need to clean out folders, files, or registry from old uninstallation
of the program?

I think it's the update defs versus update program confusion here Bill, though I
had to read a few times too.

Cindy;
If you click check for updates it really only checks for definition updates, of
which I think you are probably current at 5781. The program updates are not
being checked for availability to download contrary to the verbiage within MSAS
but are triggered automatically by some online combination of smoke and
mirrors... you can't ask for them thru MSAS. What you can do is manually
outside of MSAS browse to the Ms site and request a manual download of the
program and that will get you the version (.701) that expires 7/30/06...
hopefully. ;)

There are continuing reports of folks getting build .615 when they should be
getting .701. However, I don't know of any changes to the update mechanism
between the two builds.

Consider setting the proxy setting in Internet connections to "always
detect." This may make a difference in whether it works at work, and
whether it is able to switch between work and home.

Sign on as administrator. You are absolutely correct about what Microsoft
considers a Best Practice, but this beta is largely the product of a third
party developer--it was released only a few weeks after Microsoft acquired
the company. You can run normally as a limited user, but you will probably
see some unexpected messages, and I wouldn't expect signature updates to
work.

I do have an office that runs in this mode, with Microsoft Antispyware
installed. I haven't been onsite there in over a year--and when I do
connect to their machines it is as administrator--I'll have to go check on
how they are doing. They do run as administrator once a month to get the
critical updates installed.

I do too. What sort of a firewall is involved? The Enterprise product you
are interested in is called Microsoft Client Protection:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/solutions/security/clientprotection/default.mspx

It is in the early stages of beta, and I've no idea whether my clients will
be able to afford it--I'm somewhat pessimistic. However, I believe that the
underlying technology, if not the management console and reporting
framework, will be available in Windows OneCare Live--in public beta at:

http://windowsonecare.com

I don't know how this one will be priced, either, but I'm hoping it will be
quite affordable. Both, I believe, will be subscription based products.
Do I need to clean out folders, files, or registry from old uninstallation
of the program?

In situations where it appears that the original installation is
corrupted--i.e. user chosen settings don't stick, for example, I've often
recommended deleting \program files\microsoft antispyware and all the
subfolders. However, under normal circumstances, there's no need. I've not
bothered ever with the registry entries, or the handful of files in the
system32 folder (well, there was a bug.....)--I wouldn't worry about
cleaning up too throughly.

Have the correct build, update still doesn't work. June 28 is last update,
it says it is current.

Internet Explorer proxy settings are set to always detect. No settings in
the Spyware program

Windows Automatic updates will install even when non-admin is signed on.

Microsoft is good to charities so the enterprise product should be priced
well for us.

My only other try is to delete the info in folders after uninstalling and
then give it another try. This will not be this week though, wasted too much
time on this already. Am pricing PestPatrol
