Unwanted window popping up on startup

I have a \common window (folder) popping up upon start up of Windows XP SP2.
I have search the regedit but do not find the entry.
Anyone have another suggestion on how to stop the folder from opening?
I have seen other people with this issue, but I have not yet found the
solution.
Thanks,
Jeff

Open the Registry and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version
\Winlogon

Look at the string USERINIT in the right-hand pane.
If it reads C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,c:\windows
\system32\userinit.exe
Edit it to read simply C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Oooh, not really the best advice. If the OP follows it, their system may
be rendered unbootable. The correct entry is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Note the trailing comma, which should be there.

If the OP means that the Common Files Folder opens at startup, he should
run the System Configuration Utility and look for a blank entry or for
one pointing to Common Files. MVP Ramesh's information about file
folders opening at startup may be helpful in a general sense, even when
the folder isn't the Dell folder:

Correct. I cut the wrong duplicate out of the incorrect string value.
Thanks for the extra pair of eyes.

No problem. We all watch each others' backs. :)

You keep watching mine, too. :)
