unwanted system sound

Hello!
I just bought a laptop and I am having problems with an unwanted sound/wave
file, like a water droplet. It doesn't seem to be related to a particular
program, and occurs even when no programs are running a few times per minute.
I thought it had something to do with the battery, but it happens also when
I'm on AC power.. I checked the control panel/sounds many times, listen to
all the sounds there, and also searched for all the soundwave files stored on
the local hard disk. Unfortunately, I can't find this sound so I still don't
know what's causing it.. It is very similar to the sound "windows XP pop-up
blocked" but not quite the same.. It is very annoying and I can't figure out
how to get rid of it.
Anybody can help me?? Thank you!

How about searching for all the sound files on your computer and playing
them. If you find it rename the file. The program using it may complain and
you'll see the culprit, but the sound cant play if the fie isn't there. If
you don't find it then it may be built into a program. Get the list of all
running programs/processes and stop them one at a time until you identify
the source.

Dear alan,

Thank you for your message. I already looked for all the sound files and
listened to all of them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the one that's
disturbing me.
I opened task manager to see if I can see what's running. The sound is there
even if no applications are running. Of course, there are many processes
running. MOst of them are system processes. I tried shutting down some of
them, but I get error messages saying that doing that could cause instability
and damage the system.. Should I do it anyway??

I also tried changin the sound scheme of windows xp to "no sound", without
success.. the droplet sound is still there :-(
Any ideas??

Even setting the master volume to mute doesn't help...
what else can I do? I would really appreciate if somebody could help me.

This may sound obvious, but are you sure the sound is
actually coming from the speakers ?? Fan bearings and
other things can also make strange noises too.

Call in a plumber to fix that leaky faucet.

If you muted the master volume the sound can't be coming from your
speakers.
