Unwanted symbols in Outlook 2003

I opened up Outlook today, and wanted to reply to an e-mail. When I repsond to an e-mail, with either "reply" or "forward" or even a "new e-mail" then all these flag like symbols appear throughout the e-mail. In the original text after each sentence there are flag type symbols and return arrow things and in front of my cursor as I type. Also, there are small dot's in between each word. It does'nt seem to appear in the message the reciepient receives but it is very annoying on my end. What has caused this and how can I fix it?
