Unwanted pop ups

Erm..... lets say that I was surfing the web and 'inadvertently' downloaded
an exe file.

I have since unistalled this file, however I am now finding that no matter
what web page I am looking at I get a pop up for the site that the exe file
came from.

How do I stop this happening?

Check Control Panel add and remove programs to see if anything is there that
you do not want and remove it. Also scan your computer for spyware that
hopefully will be able to detect and remove your problem. AdAware SE does a
pretty good job as does Microsoft AntiSpyware. Whatever you use be sure to
"update" their definition database before you scan which the program usually
reminds you to and provides a link to do it. You may also need to scan in
Safe Mode. --- Steve

Remove all unwwanted programs from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel
Then also check in C:\Program files

Do that in Safe Mode.

How to boot your computer in Safe Mode :

Do this by repeatedly typing F8 while Windows is starting before
Windows logo appears.
Then you'll open the BIOS menu where you can choose to boot
the hard drive in SAFE MODE

(If you are XP user ,find more about Safe Mode
in Help and Support Center ; Start-Help and Suport)

Then download SpyBot Search and Destroy , Ad-Aware SE Personal and
Microsoft Antipsyware Beta 1

@ SpyBot Search and Destroy

@ Ad-Aware SE Personal
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

@ Microsoft Antispyware (only for genuie Windows versions)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx

Also scan your system for viruses with current and update antivirus software.

This is the basic. If you want more info, download this file written by me

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware," such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter, Bonzai
Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but
without understanding the consequences) installed, two products that
are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even possible
to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system against most
future intrusions. I use both and generally perform manual scans every
week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

There are several essential components to computer security: a
knowledgeable and pro-active user, a properly configured firewall,
reliable and up-to-date antivirus software, and the prompt repair (via
patches, hotfixes, or service packs) of any known vulnerabilities.

The weakest link in this "equation" is, of course, the computer
user. No software manufacturer can -- nor should they be expected
to -- protect the computer user from him/herself. All too many people
have bought into the various PC/software manufacturers marketing
claims of easy computing. They believe that their computer should be
no harder to use than a toaster oven; they have neither the
inclination or desire to learn how to safely use their computer. All
too few people keep their antivirus software current, install patches
in a timely manner, or stop to really think about that cutesy link
they're about to click.

Firewalls and anti-virus applications, which should always be used
and should always be running, are important components of "safe hex,"
but they cannot, and should not be expected to, protect the computer
user from him/herself. Ultimately, it is incumbent upon each and
every computer user to learn how to secure his/her own computer.
