What is MicroSoft up to???

My Internet Explorer crashes and has to be closed. As
usual I choose to let send windows send an error report to
microsoft so that they can make their product work better
in the future. What happens? I get a link saying that
there are updates that "MIGHT HELP ME AVOID THIS PROBLEM
IN THE FUTURE" (unfortunately I could neither copy or
print the messages and "tips" because internet explorer
did nothing but crash and repeat all this all the time).
So far so good, I'd be grateful for an update that lets
internet explorer crash less often. But..... here it
comes, gues what.....
Problems with Internet connectivity and Internet Explorer most often
come from virus and/or spyware infestions. Do the normal
troubleshooting:
Scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier
than 2002 and using updated virus definitions). Also, remove spyware
with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware
from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before
running them. These programs are free, so run them both since they
complement each other. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode. You may also need to run CWShredder and HijackThis
from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html . Please read the
instructions carefully. In particular, HijackThis requires skill to
use.
I AM ASKED to select "Update for Windows XP Shop for Music
Online Link (KB833998) and click Add"!! But I DON'T WANT to have
anything to do with this "Shop (snip)
On the left side of the page is a link to personalize Windows Update.
You can uncheck items you don't want to see, like driver updates
(always a bad idea), extra languages, Music Online, etc. Save your
settings and you won't see these updates any more.
for music online" service. If I want to shop music online
I do it my own way. And how on earth can this update make
my IE crash less often?
Obviously the Music Shop can't make your IE crash less often. Do the
troubleshooting as suggested above.
Can't I remove parts of windows and internet explorer that
I do not wish? I am running Windows XP HE.
No, you cannot remove parts of Windows or IE. You can try an alternate
browser like Mozilla or Firefox:
www.mozilla.org
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
But nothing is going to make your computer run better if you have
viruses and/or spyware.
