unwanted file download onto desk top

before I got sufficient security a file was downloaded directly onto my desk top. the type of file is: 'file' and the description just says: ~. last time this happened and I tried to delete it I found my whole system running extreamly slow and I was unable to access the internet, explorer.exe would not respond and I eventually had to re-format. what is this thing and how do I get rid of it without lots of hassel
