Hello,

Why is all my folders are set to read only attrinute SET in my XP Pro?
I right click on the folder and properties, unset the read only and click
OK. Its asking, "do you want to apply changes to all subfolders or ..."
I clicked OK. Then it was unset Readonly attribute. If i see again the
properties, again set back to Readonly.

Whats wrong. How can i unset?

thanx in advance

The read-only attribute, when applied to folders, has no effect
in WinXP.

They're not. The "read-only" attribute doesn't apply to folders. What
you're seeing on your screen is a "three-state" box in its third
state: not checked, not un-checked, but not applicable (on my computer
the box is filled with a greenish block.) It's trying to tell you that
the attribute doesn't really exist here. Yeah, I agree, it doesn't do
a good job of communicating that.

They are not read-only", otherwise they had the attribute "R". Double-
check with Explorer: Menu View > Choose Details > Attribute > check.

Nothing is wrong, and they are not read-only. If you'll look more closely at
the check mark in that Read-Only box, you'll see that it's gray, not black.
You can also verify this by clicking a few times in the box; it will cycle
among *three* states: unchecked, checked in black, and checked in gray.

A black check means the item is read-only and an unchecked box means it's
not read-only. But the gray check means that it's neither. The read-only
attribute is not pertinent to folders.

So no, your folders aren't read-only, and what you are seeing is perfectly
normal. There's nothing to worry about and nothing to fix.
