How to set permissions and ownership?

I am unable to set the permissions and ownership for Pegasus Mail mailbox
folders on Windows XP Pro so that the users can access them. Pegasus Mail is
freeware from http://www.pmail.com/

Pegasus wants to install all the mailbox folders for all its users in a central
location, rather than in each individual user's profile directory. I installed
pegasus at c:\pmail. The mailbox folders are in c:\pmail\mail. I have three
mailboxes so far:

c:\pmail\mail\beagle
c:\pmail\mail\bonita
c:\pmail\mail\tuck

The problem is that the folders are all marked read-only. Even when I log in as
the administrator, I cannot unset the readonly flag. The users are unable to
save either their mail server settings or any of the messages they have downloaded.

When I try to unset the read-only flag, it appears to get unset, but when I
close the properties window and open it again, the folders are readonly again.

On windows 2000 I was able to set the ownership and each of the individual
access rights for any file or folder on the system. Is there some way I can do
this on XP?

Note that moving the mailbox into the users' profile folders is not an option
due to Pegasus Mail's design.

I asked about this on the Pegasus mailing list, and this is what they said to
do, but they didn't tell me how to do it.

The file system is NTFS.

Thanks for your help,

I hate to point you to the vendor, but have you contacted
http://www.pmail.com? They have a pretty good support
forum and online knowledgebase. This to me is more of a
configuration issue on their side than an XP Pro issue.

Open Windows Explorer and click on Tools then Folder Options. Scroll down
to the bottom and make sure Use Simple File Sharing is NOT checked. Close
the Folder options window. Now you can right-click on the folders in
question and click Properties then click the Security tab and set your
permissions.

Yes, and as I said in my original post, they didn't answer my question. They
would answer questions about pegasus, but not about XP.

In fact, the response I received seemed to imply I was an idiot for even asking
the question.
