Unremoveable destop shortcut

G

Geoff

O/S Windows XP SP2 (not my computer).

A "shortcut" to an email was placed on the desktop. The original email has
now been deleted but the "shortcut" will not allow itself to be deleted! The
message being "'cannot delete file cannot read from the source file or
disk". Tried to take "ownership" of this shortcut via the Desktop folder in
order to delete but this did not work. Right click and Properties of the
shortcut only gives the General tab and also one tab named Virus. Right
click and virus scan shows nil result. Also tried taking ownership in Safe
Mode with nil result. Where to now?
Thanks

Thanks, BUT I guess I need to use the cmd prompt (WinXP) and what would the
DOS commands be? I have never been a DOS user :-( The shortcut is on the
desktop.

Utility for Deleting Invalid Files
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm
For invalid/UNC file/folder name deleting, rather than the in use problem

As it's on the desktop, look under Documents and Settings/username/desktop
Use with care and at your own discretion.

Thanks TaurArian - I'll try that utility when I can get to my friend's
computer.
