UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I've been trying to fix my blue screen problem forever. I've been reading
through some helpful articles pertaining to my problem (the blue screen of
death) but I'm quite confused now. I visted some of the websites listed on
other posts and one of them does have troubleshooting methods for
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. In fact, what do those three words mean? I was
wondering if anyone could please tell me exactly what I need to do (in the
simplest way possible) so that I can start using my computer again. I'm not a
computer wiz so its difficult understanding much of the rhetoric and all.

Technical Information:
***STOP: 0X000000ED (0X813E1738, 0XC0000032, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) appears
at the bottom of the blue screen.

Thanks to anyone with the solutions. I appreciate it.

Generally it means one of three things.

1. You're using the wrong type of ribbon cable to connect between the
motherboard and the hard drive. If the cable used is a 40 wire, you
need an 80 wire cable.

2. The file system on the hard drive is messed up. Running chkdsk /r
from the recovery console on the drive might fix it.

3. The hard drive has failed.

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive maker's web
site. When you run this file it will create a bootable floppy disk.
Boot the computer with the floppy and run the diagnostics.

See this link for information on the first two issues I mentioned.

Your Computer or Upgrade to Windows XP

If you don't feel competent to do these things, then take the computer
to a reputable computer repair shop, not a best buy or comp usa store.
