Unmountable Boot Volume

I keep getting the blue screen however I try to boot-up, in safe mode,
normally, safe with command etc.

It says:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
STOP: 0x000000ED (OX833D19E0, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

I have tried the Microsoft help query: 297185 which refers to
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, but always end up with the same blue screen. I
cannot then exit that screen except by removing and power from the laptop.

The screen comes up as Windows is loading and will not let me get in to
log-on. I did have a Windows XP update but this appeared to work fine for a
few days.

Thanks.

Alex;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at both
ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.

Thanks for the advice JJ - I have a dell laptop but no idea how to open the
hard drive and reseat it.

I do not have any "overlays" such as Max Blaster. I cannot understand why
this should suddenly go wrong now.

Alex;
Check your laptop manual or Dells website .
There will be procedures for replacing the hard drive.
Usually by removing a panel held by a single screw underneath.
You want to disconnect and reconnect the electrical connections.
Be sure to follow the links if the problem persists.
