Hi Dave

(Snip Dave)
* I thought that was already determined with the drive manufacturer's
utility.

(Snip p.mc)----------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, the Manufacturers diag's gave a double standard not a Fail,
so I assummed everything would be alright on the SATA HDD, wereas the first
ATA HDD had definatley failed.

So I decided to go ahead and reformat and install the SATA HDD, where I then
had the problem you helped me with the F6 key, that's when things didn't
seem to be going right... ie. The time it took to install the OS.
* What process is consuming the cpu/mem?

Yes "sorry "

(On the processes tab)
"System Idle Process" is...[55] in the CPU Field,
and "taskmgr.exe"...[35] in the CPU Field.
explorer.exe ...[07] svchost.exe...[02]

(On the performance tab)
"CPU Usage"... [46]
"PF Usage"...[54.8MB]
"Physical Memory (K)"...[523744]

(Snip p.mc)
| I ran a diag's called Quicktech pro, and that passed everything with the
| exception of ..."Seek Operation"
| Does this really look like the end? I am tempted to reformat and start
again or am I flogging a dead HDD?

It's weird that it has installed and everything is working, be it a snails
pace, though the slightest process is hogging all the CPU Usage!! That's why
I ran "Quicktech Pro" diag's which informed me that the seek Operation had
failed the test. I was hoping someone would say... "oh yes if the Seek Op
fails thats why your having this trouble and bin the HDD" or "Well actually
if you unplug the PC and turn it back on again, all your troubles will
vanish, and by the way your the 1000,000th Poster on this news group and
you've just won the weight of Bill gates in gold.

Ok I missed the part about swapping out the drive. Check Event Viewer for

Hi Dave

Device Manager
"hpdeskjet" (probably 'cause I forgot to unplug USB lead when installing OS)
And "PCI Modem" ('cause drivers aren't installed)

Event Viewer
[System]...4 Errors...(3) for timeouts from AudioSrv service, and (1) for
non fatal errors during installation. I checked [setuperr.log] in Windows
directory, and all were for problems registering the following OLE controls
DLL:

C:\Windows\system32\msxm13.dll
C:\Windows\PCHealth\Helpctr\Binaries\Helpsvc.exe
C:\Windows\System32\dxtmsft.dll
C:\Windows\System32\msvidct.dll
C:\Windows\System32\mstvgs.dll

I was thinking of booting with recovery cd and running ( CHKDSK C: /
R )Would that be a good move. and if so, have I put the command in properly?

I can think of no earthly reason why this should be necessary on a new
install. Personally I wouldn't bother with it. Start a new install. Before
doing so check the mobo manufacturer's web site for the latest bios flash.
Check the drive controller manufacturer's web site for the latest flash for
the controller and controller driver.

Hi Dave

I'm just a bit lost when you say "Flash" does that mean drivers?
And also when I purchased the SATA card I'd read that I should DL and
install:

Serial ATA/150 PCI Adapter card driver.exe
Version: 1.00.0050.3
Revision date: 06\06\03
Compatability: Winall

Instead of the drivers that came with the card:

SATA Connect 1205SA/EU Drivers for WinXP and 2000
(for use during new Windows installation only)

Oddly as I mentioned in earlier posts, when I came to load the SCSI drivers
(F6) I did have to use the supplied drivers, as the DL ones gave an error at
that step, whereas when the OS loaded I was gonna update to the DL drivers.
I did actually attempt this but I got a message that it couldn't find a .inf
file or words to that effect.
Anyway I'll wait for your response and do as instructed.

The driver is the software component that allows the operating system to
work with the hardware. The firmware is an instruction set that lives
onboard the device itself. When you flash you typically boot from a disk
supplied by the hardware manufacturer to update the firmware on the device.
You may need to get in touch with controller or mobo manufacturer to
determine this and the correct controller/drives setup for your situation.

Hi Dave

I got the latest flashes, bios and drive controller onto seperate floppys,
but the trouble I've had getting into [DOS mode] to write my original bios
to floppy incase I need to reinstall, you wouldn't believe.
Well I gave up in the end, some of the posts I googled newsgroups in
confirmed my despair...(XP and NTFS)
I tried safe mode with command prompt, but was getting nowhere even trying
to format a floppy in safe mode, although I did it easily by R.clicking A:\
drive...properties...format. when the O/S loads normaly.

Now if I reformat and install O/S, my only hope is that it will run faster
next time, 'cause I'm still gonna have the problem of trying to boot the
floppy with bios update on, I did try that and all I got when typing in a
command was..."Non system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key
when ready"

Anyhow I'm burnt out for now after hours of Arghhh!! One laptop online & one
frustratingly slow Desktop PC, but thanks for sticking in with me, and
hopefully I'll hear from you tommorow...ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz!!

Hi Dave

I'm at a complete loss at the moment, could you possibly give me a step by
step idiots guide to saving a copy of the original bios. And the same with
flashing the bios with new update?

I have 4 formatted floppys:

* bios update for ASUS A7A266 mobo incl. Aflash utility
*Adaptech SATA card driver V.10041
*Quickboot XP Dos disk
*MS-DOS startup disk

I've read lots of how to's but this DOS mode is still eluding me.
*Is it press delete on boot which takes you to bios setup utility?
*F8 and choose from safemode/with network/with command/en boot
loggin'/etc.etc.

I set my system to boot from floppy first and if I boot with [bios update]
floppy I get a message
"Remove disks or other media. press any key to restart"

If I boot with [Quickboot XP Dos disk] I get message
"We apologize....windows did not start successfully...hardware or software
change may have caused this."
With the option to start in safe mode/with networking/command prompt/last
known good...and normal startup.

And if I boot with [MS-DOS startup disk] "A:\>" with blinking cursor is
there, and I try to format a floppy typing in " C:\> FORMAT A: /S" as
instructed (just incase this is the DOS mode) I get a message "Invalid drive
specification"

Here is a copy of the instructions I'm trying to adhere to.

Warning:

AFLASH.EXE (unzipped) can only be executed in DOS mode and not from MS-DOS
Prompt in Windows O/S. As a result, no matter if you wish to backup or
update the BIOS content, you must create a new boot disk. Please copy
AFLASH.EXE into the disk which you wish to boot the system. In addition, in
the BIOS device boot sequence, you must set boot from "Floppy Drive" as the
first device in the order of boot sequence.

BIOS Update Procedure (If neccessary)

Use Update using Aflash BIOS Update Procedure

1. ASUS Online Update (Download from ASUS WWW ` FTP) for latest version BIOS
and save it on a floppy disk.

2. Use the floppy disk as described in above to boot.

3. In A:\ DOS mode, please unzip AFLASH.EXE (unzipped).

4. In MAIN MENU, please choose Update BIOS Main Block From File. Please
refer to [2. Update BIOS Including Boot Block and ESCD] .

5. After the procedure has complete, remove the disk from the floppy drive
and shutdown the power.

6. Reboot, hold down key and enter BIOS menu. You must choose "LOAD SETUP
DEFAULTS" to activate the new BIOS, then reconfig other items in the BIOS
menu.

Warning!

If you experienced difficulty in the process of BIOS update, do not
turn off the power or reboot the system. Just repeat the process of update
will do. If problem persists, please use the backup copy of the original
BIOS on the floppy disk to overwrite it again. If you cannot use EZFlash to
successfully complete the process, then your system may be unable to boot
up. If so, pleas contact your local ASUS vendor or dial ASUS Hotline for
additional support.

I'm gonna D/L EZFlash wich is supposed to bypass the DOS section, but if you
could reply I'd be greatfull

I have 4 formatted floppys:
## These cannot be created from Windows
* bios update for ASUS A7A266 mobo incl. Aflash utility
*Adaptech SATA card driver V.10041
*Quickboot XP Dos disk
*MS-DOS startup disk

I've read lots of how to's but this DOS mode is still eluding me.

I set my system to boot from floppy first and if I boot with [bios update]

## This is the part where you need a dos boot disk. Use this link if you
don't have one yet.

## Create the boot disk and copy AFLASH.EXE to it (you can do the copy while
still in Windows), boot from the disk and then at the A:\ prompt type
AFLASH.EXE
This puts you at step three below

Use Update using Aflash BIOS Update Procedure

1. ASUS Online Update (Download from ASUS WWW ` FTP) for latest version
BIOS
and save it on a floppy disk.

2. Use the floppy disk as described in above to boot.

@@ No. According to your instructions you just copy AFLASH.EXE to the DOS
boot floppy, boot from it, then execute it.

I don't know what you need to do for the drive controller but basically the
same steps I presume. There should be some specific instructions for this as
well.

We never did determine the vintage of your equipment and more important the
current firmware versions. Depending on it's age this may be the only hope
for you. The manufacturer's web sites may provide some incite into this.
Usually the firmware upgrades come with a readme.txt (or similar) that list
all the fixes that were included in the upgrade.

If you're going to do it I would do so before the next clean install.
