UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME

P

Hi

My WinXP Home PC NTFS SP1 has just crashed whilst I was using it. It gave a
blue screen with error: 0X000000ED... (unmountable boot volume)

An hour or so earlier I installed latest drivers for my NVIDIA graphics
card, and also installed TW PGA Tour 2006, it was a cloned copy that didn't
work, I'd also been cleaning out the registry with Registry tune up and
Registry fix.

So after "BSOD" I ran CHKDSK off recovery cd, which informed me I had
unrecoverable sectors or words to that effect, then I ran FIXBOOT which
completed but didn't sort the problem, and I cannot get into safe mode to
remove drivers and game.
I googled but I couldn't see a fix I could apply.

All help would be greatfully appreciated

If it showed you unrecoverable sectors the hard drive has gone bad. Try
putting the hard drive in another computer as a secondary to pull the data
off. It's worked for me before.

Either restore the registry from a known good backup or you'll probably need
to start a new install.

This indicates a problem with either the hard drive, the IDE
controllers, the motherboard drivers, or the registry entries pointing
to those drivers or other key information on the hard drive.

This may well be the source of your problems. Automated registry
cleaners almost always do more harm than good, unless the user is very
knowledgeable and very cautious.

So after "BSOD" I ran CHKDSK off recovery cd, which informed me I had
unrecoverable sectors or words to that effect, ......

Which seems to indicate that your hard drive has failed. However, a
few bad sectors don't necessarily mean that the entire drive is
unusable. In fact, a few bad sectors on a hard drive are not all that
unusual. However, if the number of bad sectors continues to grow, then
the hard drive is "toast." Quite often, a clean installation, after
deleting partitions, repartitioning, and formatting the hard drive can
restore the hard drive to usefulness, with a slightly reduced capacity.
(The partitioning/formatting process will mark the bad sectors and
preclude the OS from attempting to use them.)

A clean reinstallation of the OS will also undo any damage done to the
registry, by the simple expedient of erasing the damaged registry and
created a new one.

Hi

I deciced to reformat using the recovery cd, I got to about 15% then I got a
blue screen again stating...

"The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys
DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS"

Stop error: 0X000000CE

Should I bin the HDD or can it live again? :)

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web
site. This will create a bootable CD or floppy disk. Boot from that
and run the diagnostics.

This is JMHO, but I have come to the conclusion that some aspects of
XP are a step backwards in the evolution of operating systems.

I have twice experienced XP crashes, such as Unmountable Boot Volume,
corrupted or missing Sys32 files and have had other friends whom have
suffered as well.

With ver up to 98 you could at least boot up with a boot disc and have
access to the HD, and even copy those files to other drives, but with
XP formatted for NTFS this option dissappears. The only options for
this is to try a repair which may or may not destroy your existing
files. The other option is to remove HD and put it into a working
computer this again is hit and miss as the working computer will
sometimes tell you that you must re-activate XP as your system has
changed.

Surely, in the 21st century MS could develop a small utility program
that would provide the same access as boot discs once did.

Me again!!

Well I formatted the SATA HDD and done a full diagnostics check with Maxtors
floppy and all passed with one exception;

"Partition information..........Absent
Passed"

* Booted up and Adaptec SATA Host controller was recognised
* HDD was recognised as Primary channel,
went into BIOS and couldn't see SATA HDD...(I was hoping it was because it
was SATA on PCI Card rather than EIDE channel??)
* Set HDD as #1
* Re-Booted with XP disc to set up Windows
* Got message;

"Set up did not find any hard disk drives installed in your
computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and
properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related
hardware configuration is correct. This may involve
running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program"

What am I doing wrong?...I do have latest diagnostics utility...How is it,
that on boot-up the HDD is acknowledged, with the exception of the BIOS, yet
when I try to install WINXP from disc it says it cant find the HDD??

I'd like to say "My creartion...It lives!!...But it wont let me...Dohhh!!

You'll want to boot the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for
your serial ATA controller in drive "A"

"Eureka!!

Thanks Dave, but before I go any further, I'm on the step were I get the
choice to partition the drive or not, If yes, then considering my SATA HDD
is "250gb", should I make a partition for "Windows" and another, lets say
"Storage"

And if so what size do I allow for Windows to perform unhindered?

I don't know what apps you're planning on installing but I would make the
partition for the operating system at least 15 gB

You've got plenty of space. I would make it at least 25 GB.

Hi

I was going to make it 20gb, but I decided to go without a partition for now
and put one in later.
The thing now is that it has been about 6 hours and it's still hasn't
finished installing the OS from my OEM recovery disc, it's done;

* Collecting information
* Dynamic update
* Preparing installation
( and it's still got to do)
* Installing Windows
* Finalizing information

I did get a message that some software was not signed etc.etc. And I think
that was down to the SATA drivers I installed with the F6 function, reason
being, the first drivers I installed were DL from Maxtor and were signed
(WHQL??) but funny enough I got an error (can't remember now) So I installed
the drivers that came with the ADAPTEC SATACONNECT PCI card and that done
the job, I was going to install the signed drivers for the SATA card after
the installation was finished.

But the thing is, I know it shouldn't be taking this long to complete, so I
will stick with it and see how things run after completion..."I'll let you
know after my 14 day installathon"...Sigh!!

04:48am and all is well

"and put one in later"

You'll need to use a third party product such as Partition Magic to
accomplish this.

Hi all

Well eventually the OS loaded, but to my dismay it was running at a minute a
mile, taskmanager showed CPU usage between 50 to 100%...System idle was
floating around the 50's, and task manager the 40's.
I ran a diag's called Quicktech pro, and that passed everything with the
exception of "Seek Operation"
Does this really look like the end? I am tempted to reformat and start again
or am I flogging a dead HDD?
