Whatever the antivirus software is, the professional answer is "renew then
update your AV".
Actually, people don't renew their AV even when they know it out of date
because of cost. There are free AV or almost free AV that are not as
clumsy as McAfee and that do a better job than McAfee.
Personally, when I run into people using McAfee I encourage them to
switch to something else. I can't tell you how many McAfee systems I've
run into that were not even updated, not once, and the users though they
were fully protected and getting daily updates.
So, the professional answer is to direct them to an AV product they can
use, will use, and will be able to keep updated.
