Hi,
I have a multiboot system of xp pro and xp home. Now I want to uninstall xp
home. But when I tried to use the osuninst.exe to do that, it wouldn't work
and I received this : 'Setup can not uninstall Windows XP because the
necessary registration information is missing.'
So I don't know how to do it. Please advise.
Thanks

The normal way to uninstall an OS is to format the drive it's on. You
haven't given any info on the setup, if the two OS's are installed on
different drives or partitions, or on the same partition. See this link for
some info.

Yes, I installed my two OS on 2 different drives. I've had a look at the link
you gave me. But it wrote about how to remove a Win2000 and keep Xp in a
multiboot system. Does the instruction apply to my case of 2 XPs?

The easiest way i know since you have it on 2 hd's go into your boot.ini file
get rid of the xp version you dont want and then reboot then format the drive
you dont want and reuse. you also can right click on my computer go to
properties
advanced , startup adn recovery settings select the default OS you want to
use then click on edit this will open the boot.ini file remove the line that
contains the os you dont want and you should be ok.

If they are on separate drives it's straightforward. Boot into the
installation you want to keep and delete the \Windows folder on the older
drive. Again you could get more specific help you you provided some
details. What OS is installed on what drive. What is the System drive
where the files that boot the OS are located?

I installed xp pro on drive C, which is the default drive for windows
installation; then I installed xp home on drive D. I think the files that
boot the OS on each drive are in the Windows folder.
When I delete the Windows folder on the older drive, do I have to watch out
for any files that shouldn't be deleted?
Thanks in advance.

Ok that is the easiest configuration to deal with. All the files for
booting either OS are located on the drive where XP is installed, boot.ini,
ntldr, ntdetect.com, so you can format the other drive with XP Home or just
delete the \Windows folder. If after that both installations are offered as
a choice at boot up by the boot loader, obviously you won't be able to boot
into the XP Home OS. So boot into XP Pro, from Start | Run type in
msconfig, click ok. On the boot tab click on Check all boot paths. It will
flag the XP Home installation as not being valid, and let it delete that
entry from boot.ini.

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format the hard
drive or partition and install a new OS of your choice.

Only if you had performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup
the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can you then
boot into Safe Mode and click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
to uninstall WinXP. All of these conditions must be met for the uninstall
option to be available.
