Uninstalling Safari from XP

Guest

I am cleaning my XP system and would like to uninstall Safari.
(When I look at my Add or Remove Programs screen I see entries for:
- Apple Mobile Device Support
- Apple Software Update
but no entry for Safari.

Does this mean I may have uninstalled Safari at some time in the past but
these are left over components? I am assuming Safari is still on my system
because when I installed IE 8 it asked me if I wanted to transfer settings
from Safari or Firefox. But I cannot find it and maybe that IE was confused
by the leftovers.

Have you looked in program files ?

Yes I did before asking (and I did search Google). I was just playing it
safe.

I must have uninstalled it long ago and the two I mentioned must have been
left overs. I uninstalled them to reduce services running in the
background.

If you download the Apple installer, and inspect it with 7-zip,
you can see what is inside.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7-zip

For example, I downloaded this version, which doesn't include QuickTime.
If I got the QuickTime version, there would have been a QuickTime entry
as well.

SafariSetup.exe 28,521,768 bytes

At the top level in that download, using 7-ZIP I see

AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Bonjour.msi
Bonjour64.msi
Safari.msi
SetupAdmin.exe

So you can see where the Apple Software Updates came from.

The Apple Software Updates, is also a back door for downloading
other software. So if Apple has some new whizzy software they
think you absolutely must have, it can magically appear with
a "security update". Other companies have pulled stunts like this
as well, so it isn't like the computer industry has a sense of
ethics or anything. (Like Microsoft changing the search in Internet
Explorer to Bing, as part of a "security update".)

This is the version with QuickTime included. In terms of the
msi files, QuickTime is roughly half of the content here.

SafariQuickTimeSetup.exe 49,382,696 bytes

AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Bonjour.msi
Bonjour64.msi
QuickTime.msi
Safari.msi
SetupAdmin.exe

If I analyze iTunes, this is what I find. This is possibly
the 32 bit version.

iTunesSetup.exe version 8.2.0.23 77,690,152 bytes

AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi <-----
AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
Bonjour.msi
iTunes.msi
MobileMe.msi
QuickTime.msi
SetupAdmin.exe

So that shows a possible source of Apple Mobile Device Support.
It could have come with iTunes.

The only thing that regularly stops 7-ZIP, is if the download
uses InstallShield. I can't look inside those. Presumably there
are hacker tools available somewhere, for dissecting those.

Hi Jeff,

Mobile Device Support came from iTunes, in case it wasn't answered yet.
