Uninstalling Messenger

R

RFJ

I'm trying to remove Windows Messenger via Control Panel/Add-Remove
Programs/Add-Remove Windows components.

The first thing I'm asked to do is insert the XP CD which I do. Then I get
an error message saying that 'Setup cannot copy zClientm.ex_'

If I hit the browse button the cd opens in the \i386 folder and I can see
the required file.

Retrying has no effect - nor does trying to remove messenger in safe mode or
restricted start-up.

OS has SP2 with all the latest updates and fixes. I'm logged on as
administrator.

Any idea on what's happening and how I can overcome it. (In particular is
there an old instal script that is looking to load a file that is nothing to
do with messenger when I'm trying to uninstall MSM.)

TIA

Why not just disable it in the services applet? Or are you referring to
msmsgs.exe which is a different anumal?

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Unfortunately none worked :(

Having played around a bit more I can't seem to add or remove anything in my
windows configuration without the error message 'Setup cannot copy
zClientm.ex_'
coming up.

I'll repost another message.

Cheers

Why uninstall? Just go into the services applet (services.msc) and set the
startup type to disabled.

zClientm.ex_ is the compressed version of zClientm.exe.

zClientm.exe is a process belonging to the Microsoft Gaming Zone which
allows you to play games on the Internet on Zone.com's website.

Just experienced the same problem. Go to Add/Remove Windows
Components, click on "Accessories/Utilities" then click the details
button. Click on games and uncheck "internet games". Once you have
removed the internet games you shouldn't encounter the problem again.

I just downloaded the script from that link. When I clicked on the file to
run the script, the popup window started flashing and a loud static sound
came through my speakers. I had to shut down the computer to get it to stop.

Any ideas why this happened?
