Uninstalled IE6 From Windows XP

I was using IE7 beta 2, ran into a problem, and read that someone suggested
"failing back" to IE6. Now I'm left with Firefox as my browser but I'm
trying to get IE6 back. When I attempted to do that online, the MS update
routine told me it couldn't find IE5 or higher. IE6 - I believe - came with
my WindowsXP Home Edition about 2 years ago. How do I get it back?

Ya it could be that simple. Although I have no idea why you uninstalled IE7.
I've had it since the first release and it works like a charm, although I
hate the yellow security warning bar. I wish, for once, MS would allow users
to decide their own level of security. TTFN.

I experimented and decided to click on the Internet Explorer icon. It pulled
up a copy the asked me if I wanted to continue working off line. I chose to
connect. I was ultimately taken to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx and asked if I
wanted to proceed. I backed out.

It looks like I don't have to reinstall anything in order to fall back to
IE6. From what I've been able to pick up here subsequent to leaving the 1st
message is the IE6 is part of the Windows XP. So even though I uninstalled
IE7 (which was an upgrade from IE6) it looks like it will reinstall itself
then go to the MS website and update itself.

Could it be this simple or am I wishing too hard?

Yes. If you uninstall IE7 properly you will be left with IE6. Open IE and
go to Help | About.

You are mostly correct. When you select the option to uninstall IE7, that
will automatically restore IE6.

Well, Gene.... it did. But it left me with another problem. I got this
message when IE6 attempted to update on the MS website:

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the
most out of your computer.

Windows Update uses ActiveX Controls and active scripting to display content
correctly and to determine which updates apply to your computer.
Tell me about active scripting and ActiveX controls

To view and download updates for your computer, Windows Update should be
listed as a Trusted Site in Internet Explorer.

To add Windows Update to the trusted sites zone:

1.. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
2.. Click the Security tab.
3.. Click the Trusted Sites icon, and then click Sites...
4.. Uncheck the "require server verification" checkbox.
5.. Make sure the following URLs are listed in the Web Sites list box:
a.. http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
b.. http://*.windowsupdate.com
Note: If you need to add a URL to the Web Sites list and the Add button is
disabled, contact your system administrator.

That's the message I got, the "Add" button is disable, and I'm the
administrator. I guess that's what I became by default when I set up an
intranet in my home; three computers tied through a router and switch/hub.

Can you, by chance, tell me what I need to do next, Gene?
