unexpected computer name changes

We are experiencing unexpected computer name changes this year.

We have rolled out thousands of Windows 2000 Professional SP4
computers with Ghost 7.5 over the years. Now for some unknown reason
some of the computers are loosing their computer names. The names are
magically changing back to the one on the original Ghost image.

Ghost Walker reports that the sid is unique but the computer name has
somehow changed back. However, if you look at the Full computer name
in the Network Identification tab under the System Properties, it will
NOT have the image computer name but instead have the correct computer
name.

Active Directory was migrated from 2000 to 2003 this year.

When building a machine from an image, I always start the machines up and
change the name *first* before I run GHSTWALK, then I reboot it with a
floppy and run Ghost Walker to change the SID only, then I join it to the
Domain if required. I don't trust Ghostwalker to handle the naming properly.
The fact that Ghost walker can only work with a name if it is the same
length as the old name is already a red flag to me.

You might try renaming the machine to something different the normal way,
reboot to take effect, then rename it back again, reboot to take effect.
