Duplicate name exists error

I'm having two Windows 2000 computers display the error
message "a duplicate name exists on the network" during
bootup. No changes to the network, servers, or
workstations has occured, however the error mysteriously
appeared earlier today. I am positive that there are no
other names out there that are conflicting. In fact, I
actually renamed the computer and the error still popped
up.

- Ping the offending name and unplug cables until you can isolate
the problem machine.
- Check all workgroup names. One of them might be the same
as a machine name.
