Undefined function 'Left'

I am getting an error message from a particular Access
database saying "Unidentified function 'Left' ...".
Similar error for 'Right' and 'Mid' functions.
I have tried reinstalling Access but still get error.
What can I do? What might be causing the error? The
syntax is correct.
