Uncontrolled scrolling in Windows Mail

HELP!! My Windows Mail (V6.0.6000.16386 running on Vista) suddenly has
started freaking out. When I open it, or when I click to open an email, it
begins madly scrolling from the newest emails to the oldest. It will stop if
I click on the reropen email but trying to stop it in any other way doesn't
work. If I'm deleting emails, it will let me go from one to the next, but if
I try skipping over one forget it--it begins scrolling like crazy again.

I've closed the program and even restarted the computer so that doesn't do
the trick. Can I update Mail without losing the messages I have saved? Or
is there some obscure box that unchecked itself?

Thanks so much for any suggestions. This is frustrating!!!!

Is the scroll button stuck or is it a laptop and you are activating the mousepad? You can try compacting and repairing the database (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) and also you can try updating your version of Vista.

Thanks Steve--you are a complete genius! I was blaming Mail when it appears
it's actually my mouse. If I used the touch pad (it is a laptop) with the
batteries out of the mouse, things work fine. If the mouse is on and I click
on something, it's off to the races.

A new mouse appears to be in order.

And I apologize to Vista and Windows Mail for wrongly blaming them...

Thanks SO much!
