uncontolled photo copying

After downloading photos into a general folder under 'my pictures' I then hold down "CTRL" while I select certain photos to move to tmore appropriate files. Trouble is that my photos then begin 'replicating' on their own inside the general folder while I am selecting others. If I do not stop trying to select and move the replication will go on and on. I have looked up to find as many as 10 copies of 100 photos (yes, 1000 photos) have been made into the same general folder. The photos will be labele "copy 1 of ..." , "copy 2 of ..." HELP! This happens on both my home and office XP systems.

Maybe the following info will help:

It happens occasionally to most anyone who
is trying to multiple select by holding the Ctrl
or Shift key while left clicking to select the
image files.

The copies are created when you fail to
completely release the mouse button before
you move the pointer to another file. If a group
of selected files is dragged...even the slightest
bit...the next mouse click will produce copies
of all the previously highlighted files.

It's somewhat easier if you have your Folder
Options set to Single Click...this way you can
select/deselect a file with just a mouse over
and you don't have to click. For multiples you
still have to hold...Ctrl or Shift.

No click...no drag...no copy...maybe that's
your solution.

If you wish to delete all the copies in a folder...
open the folder and do a search for "copy"
and then try the following:

Go to...Edit / Select All...or type...Ctrl / A...

With all files selected...go to...File / Delete...
or press your Delete key...or...right click the
group and choose "Delete".

This usually occurs when selecting images holding the control key and the
mouse button is released while dragging. To select images in consecutive
order use the shift key select the first and last image to highlight all
images in between release the mouse button then right click the highlighted
image(s) choose delete. To select images that are not in consective order
use the control key then after highlighting the images you wish to delete
release the mouse button then right click the highlighted image(s) choose
delete.

I finally found a solution to this problem.

The problem is a result of hypersensitivity on some
optical mice used in conjunction with Windows XP. In
essence, the computer thinks you are drag-and-drop
copying when all you are actually doing is selecting
files.

If you select the files using the KEYBOARD instead of the
mouse, I bet that you will not suffer this duplication
problem.

To select files using the keyboard, simply use the arrow
keys to move onto the first desired file. Press and hold
the CTRL key. Use the arrow keys to move down or over to
the next desired file. When you land on it, press the
SPACE key. Repeat this process until all the files you
desire to be selected are selected (but remember not to
let go of the CTRL key as you work). Once all the files
are selected, you can release the CTRL key. You may now
click on CUT, move to a new folder, and PASTE the
photos. Or, you may delete the selected files.

See if this helps. If not, reply to me at the above
address but remove the _NO_SPAM_ portion.

Good luck!
